Dr. Amal A. M. Elgharbawy is an Associate Professor at the International Institute for Halal Research and Training (INHART), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and a Registered Professional Technologist with a specialisation in biotechnology and industrial applications. She holds a Doctorate in Biotechnology Engineering and has developed an interdisciplinary academic portfolio spanning green biotechnology, biomedical innovation, and sustainable solvent systems.
With over five years of experience in academia, Dr. Amal has taught a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Halal Pharmaceuticals, Research Methodology, and Biotechnology and Halal Authentication. Her teaching philosophy is rooted in project-based learning, practical experimentation, and research-integrated instruction, aimed at nurturing scientific inquiry and ethical innovation.
Her research interests focus on the development and application of ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, and nanoemulsions for drug delivery, antimicrobial therapies, and environmental sustainability. She has led and contributed to numerous national and international research grants, collaborated with multidisciplinary teams, and published widely in high-impact Scopus- and ISI-indexed journals.
In her leadership capacity at INHART, Dr. Amal plays a strategic role in strengthening the institute’s research ecosystem. She provides initiatives to expand grant funding (local, industrial, and international), ensures alignment of proposals with INHART’s niche research areas, and spearheads the formation of transdisciplinary research clusters in partnership with other faculties and universities. Her efforts aim to enhance research performance and ensure timely delivery of grant outputs.
Dr. Amal is also an active peer reviewer, consultant, and academic trainer. She holds professional memberships in several international scientific bodies, including the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD). Her status as a Professional Technologist further reflects her applied competence and commitment to bridging science, technology, and societal benefit.
